Painted outdoors in Santa Maria de Merlès under the fall sun, this self portrait was built one small section at a time, a piece of the face worked to completion before moving to the next. The method kept Fisher from settling into a fixed, over-corrected likeness, letting each fragment hold its own looseness rather than resolving into a single controlled whole.

Painted barefoot in the grass, the portrait carries the particular attention of working from direct observation outdoors, light changing, the sitter also the subject, nothing between the eye and the panel but the next small piece in front of her.
