Two hands fill the frame, close enough that nothing else competes for attention. Old scars mark the wrists. A coffin nail hangs from a chain wound around the fingers. A ring, small and unadorned, sits on one hand. Fisher painted the hands from life, her own, choosing a cropped and unflinching composition so the scars could not be softened or looked past.

The nail is a memento mori Fisher has worn for years, a private reminder that time is finite and not to be wasted. The ring marks a turning point at a residency in Menorca, part of her return to art after years away from it. Together the two objects hold the painting's central argument: that healing is not a fixed state but an ongoing practice, one that requires staying honest about what still needs tending. The title carries that tension in its punctuation. Not healed and vigilant, but healed, but vigilant, the comma doing the work of refusing an easy resolution.
