Two hands reach toward each other out of a dark ground. One is fully present, rendered with the same close attention Fisher brings to all her figurative work. The other only partially exists, emerging from shadow, its edges dissolving into warmth and light. The closer the two hands come, the more solid the second one appears, as though proximity itself is what gives it form.
The painting asks a question it refuses to answer: are these hands reaching toward each other, or pulling apart? Fisher is less interested in that outcome than in what happens before it, the space where longing does its work. The subject is not a couple but a single mind, caught in the act of constructing their desire. The imagined hand exists only because the real one is reaching for it. Without the dreamer, the dream has no shape at all.
