A close view along the riverbank, purple loosestrife and tall grasses rising at the water’s edge while the surface beyond holds a loose carpet of lily pads in green and gold. Église Saint-Jean de Joigny appears only in reflection, its pale stone and dissolving into the water’s blues and greens rather than standing fixed against the sky. The brushwork loosens as it moves from the sharply observed foreground flowers into the broader, more atmospheric passages of water, giving the painting the loose immediacy of a warm summer afternoon.
