Visions
Ocular portraits, precursor to Soft Tissues
We are animals before we are anything else, and as animals, we look to the eyes before we look to anything else. Long before language, the eye told us what we needed to know most urgently: is this a predator or is this prey. That instinct is written into the architecture of almost every visual system on earth and some part of us has never stopped running that calculation. When a stranger's eyes meet ours, something older than thought is already asking the question.
Visions isolates that moment. Each portrait removes the body, the setting, the entire social architecture we normally use to interpret a person, and leaves only the eye. Without a mouth to read, without posture, without hands, the viewer is thrown back on instinct. What is left is not a face but a signal: dilation, focus, the particular quality of a gaze that can't quite be faked. The eye is one of the only places on the human body where the nervous system speaks without permission. It widens with feeling before the mind decides to let it.
This is also the oldest of intuitions. Long before science had a word for pupillary response, cultures across the world had already arrived at the eye as threshold: Cicero's assertion that the eyes interpret the mind, the Gospel's "the eye is the lamp of the body," Da Vinci’s conviction that "The eye, which is called the window of the soul, is the principal means by which the central sense can most completely and abundantly appreciate the infinite works of nature." Visions takes that inheritance seriously, not as sentiment but as subject. To paint the eye alone is to ask what we are actually looking for when we look into someone: proof of danger, proof of feeling, or proof of a self.
As a precursor to Soft Tissues, which turns to the body to trace how psychological weight settles into flesh, Visions begins at the opposite extreme: the site where the body disappears almost entirely, and only the animal instinct to read another creature remains.
